Towamensing Township is the first township in Carbon County to adopt a historical preservation zoning ordinance. In 2007 the Township Supervisors appointed an ad hoc committee to identify historic buildings or sites in the Township and report its findings.
This committee working with Township residents, identified approximately 120 historic township resources. These included houses, barns, bridges and schools that are at least 100 years old.

In 2009 the Supervisors adopted the list as part of the Township's Zoning Ordinance and appointed a Historical Commission. The current membership for 2022 consists of Karl Rolappe, Chair and members Don Bonett, Jack Branch, Gary Anthony and Roy Christman. This Commission is charged with collecting material on the historic sites and structures index and keeping it updated. It is also responsible for updating the resource list and making recommendations to the Supervisors.
The Historical Commission meets at 7:00pm on the fourth Thursday of the month at the Township Building on Stable Road. Members of the public are encouraged to attend these meetings. If you are interested in our local history, consider joining the Towamensing Township Historical Commission. The seven-member Commission currently has two vacancies.
