Historic Commission

Towamensing Township Towamensing Township is the first township in Carbon County to adopt a historical preservation zoning ordinance. In 2007, the Township Supervisors appointed an ad hoc committee to identify historic buildings or sites in the Township and report its findings.

This committee consisting of Roy Christman, Tom Newman, and Curt Beers, working with Township residents, have identified approximately 120 historic township resources. These include houses, barns, bridges and schools that are at least 100 years old.

The current membership for 2022 consists of Karl Rolappe, Chair and members Don Bonett, Jack Branch, Gary Anthony and Roy Christman. This Commission is charged with collecting material on the historic sites and structures index and keeping it updated. They are also responsible for updating the resource list and making recommendations to the Supervisors.

The Historic Commission meets at 7:00pm on the fourth Thursday of the month at the Township Building on Stable Road and members of the public are encouraged to attend these meetings.
