Historical Commission

Towamensing Township Towamensing Township is the first township in Carbon County to adopt a historical preservation zoning ordinance. In 2007 the Township Supervisors appointed an ad hoc committee to identify historic buildings or sites in the Township and report its findings.

This committee working with Township residents, identified approximately 120 historic township resources. These included houses, barns, bridges and schools that are at least 100 years old.

The Kibler School (pictured), is one of nine one-room schools located in Towamensing Township, was built in 1898. Like many other similar structures, the passing years took its toll on the building until the Palmerton Area Historical Society acquired it in 1996 and moved it to its present location at 6495 Pohopoco Drive. Visitors are welcome to ring the large school bell, sit in original desks, peruse old arithmetic and spelling books, and examine other artifacts used by students 100 years ago. Contact Roy Christman at (610) 377-0235 to arrange a tour.
